Most Tragic Crash

Portrait of Lech Kaczyński
Last morning at 7.56 BST the President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, his wife and numerous Polish officials died in the crash of Tupolev 154 at the Smolensk-North airbase, Russia. They were travelling to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre of over 20 thousand Polish prisoners by the Soviets. None of the 96 aboard the plane survived.

The parliamentary Speaker, Bronisław Komorowski, now the acting president, announced a week of national mourning and two minutes of silence this Sunday, at 11am BST.

Among the victims was Ryszard Kaczorowski, Honorary GCMG, who between 1989 and 1990 served as the last President of Poland in exile. His death is a particularly heavy blow to the UK Poles.

In this difficult time we are very grateful for the many  condolences we have received from students and friends of various nations.

Oxford International Festival 2010

BIGGEST FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR

The Oxford International Festival is Oxford’s biggest cultural extravaganza with food, performances, and cultural stalls from all over the world. Last year’s Festival was very successful, with 32 national and cultural societies coming together to set up 19 food stalls, 23 cultural stalls and 10 performances, and over 1,500 people attended. This year we aim to make it even better!

UNLOCKING DIVERSITY

Diversity is something we cherish here at Oxford, and we believe there is no better way to raise awareness of this fact than to have the cultural and national societies coming together to showcase their cultural heritage. The festival will have 3 main parts:

So far we have around 20 societies coming to set up food stalls to sell their proudest national dishes. Come and treat yourself with world cuisine from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia and America.

2. CULTURAL SHOWCASE
Cultural and national societies will be showcasing their cultural heritage, sell handicrafts, and offer cultural services – e.g. Chinese character writing, Salsa dancing lessons, etc.

3. LIVE PERFORMANCES
Throughout the day there will be live cultural performances – including national dances, live world music, a cappella singing, and more.

Change after Socialism: Central and Eastern Europe in a Comparative Perspective

by Prof Leszek Balcerowicz (Warsaw School of Economics, former Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Chairman of the National Bank of Poland).

The lecture will be preceded by a meeting with Polish students and other members of the Polish Society.
Start Time – Meeting: 15:30
Start Time – Lecture: 17:00

Date: 2010-02-23

Location: Seminar Room G, Economics Dept.

Biography:

Leszek Balcerowicz is a Professor of Economics at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH), a former Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance as well as a former Chairman of the National Bank of Poland (NBP). He is best known for playing a leading role in Poland’s economic transformation in the aftermath of the Fall of Communism.
Professor Balcerowicz has received numerous honours and awards from universities and institutions all over the world.

In September 1989, Leszek Balcerowicz became the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance of the first non-communist government behind the Iron Curtain. He prepared and oversaw the programme of economic reform, commonly known as the ’shock therapy’, that was to counter hyperinflation and radically restructure Poland’s crisis-struck economy. The Balcerowicz Plan allowed Poland to move away from inefficient communist central planning and become a successful free-market state. In 2005, Professor Balcerowicz was awarded Poland’s highest Honour, the Order of the White Eagle, for his role in the country’s economic transformation.

Professor Balcerowicz has remained a very active figure in the economic and political life of Poland. He became the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance once again in 1997 and held these positions until 2000. From 2001 to 2007, he served as the Chairman of the National Bank of Poland.
